Building Careers and Shaping Public Policy

27 July 2001

The Honorable Carl Levin
Chairman,  Committee on Armed Services
United States Senate
SR-269, Russell Senate Office Building
Washington, DC 20510

Dear Chairman Levin:

I am writing on behalf of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers-United States of America (IEEE-USA) in support of the confirmation of Brigadier General Ronald M. Sega as Director of Defense Research and Engineering (DDR&E) in the U.S. Department of Defense.

General Sega has had a varied and distinguished career in the U.S. Air Force, as an astronaut with two Space Shuttle missions to his credit, and as a professor at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs since 1982. He is currently Dean of the University's College of Engineering and Applied Science, where he oversees an extensive research program, which includes work with important defense applications in such fields as communications and signal processing, flight dynamics and control, infrared imaging, microelectronics, magnetic thin films and network designs. A Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Dr. Sega has also published research in the fields of electromagnetics and microwave antennas, and is an active participant in IEEE's International Radiation Effects Conference.

IEEE-USA believes General Sega would bring a wealth of background and expertise to the DDR&E. For these reasons, we are pleased to support his nomination and ask your support for his confirmation.

Sincerely,

Ned R. Sauthoff, Ph.D.
2001 IEEE-USA President
