The first in a series IEEE-USA
promotional announcements for 2010
was made on "Kojo's Tech
Tuesday" on Washington WAMU's radio
station on Jan. 5. A
total of 50 I-USA announcements will
be made on WAMU this year
-- primarily on "Tech Tuesday" and
"Science Friday"-- in order to raise
IEEE-USA's visibility within the
Washington, DC market.

IEEE-USA's
Career Webinar series kicked-off for 2010
with a presentation by financier Dileep Rao
entitled "Lessons from Boostraps to Billions"
with tips on business development and financing
for high-tech entrepreneurs.
The first congressional briefing for the
IEEE-USA-supported
Congressional Research Caucus will address
"Defense Basic Research: Critical to National
Security and Economic Security” was held on 19
Jan.
IEEE-USA President Evelyn Hirt addressed
attendees at the IEEE Region 4 meeting, to be
held 22-24 Jan. 2010 in Detroit, Michigan.
CAREER WEBINAR: Industry CEO and book
author Roxanne Riveria delivered a
webinar entitled "There's no
Crying in Business: How Women Can Win in a
Male-Dominated Industry" on 28 Jan.
In January, IEEE-USA sponsored student
professional awareness conferences at: Ohio
University (20 Jan), University of Dayton (30
Jan.) and Central Michigan University (30 Jan.).

On 5 Feb., IEEE-USA's Intellectual Property
Committee will host a roundtable convened on
behalf of the U.S Patent and Trademark Office
for invited organizations to discuss the
potential for developing references of
standardized technical terms for use in
reviewing patent applications.
IEEE-USA's 2010
Careers Fly-In focused on K-12 education
and promoting integration of engineering
concepts into teaching at the pre-university
level. Scheduled for 8-9 Feb.
2010, during a major winter storm, the event
still drew a half dozen volunteer participants.

The IEEE-USA Board of Directors met on 12
Feb. in Atlanta, Georgia as part of the IEEE
Board of Directors meeting series.
IEEE-USA participated in 2010
National
Engineers Week activities (14-20 Feb. 2010),
including the finals of the Future Cities
Competition, the New Faces of Engineering,
Introduce a Girl to Engineering, Discover
Engineer, and especially the
E-Week
Family Day at the National Building Museum
in Washington, DC.
In February, IEEE-USA sponsored student
professional awareness conferences at: 2/2
Valparaiso University (2 Feb.), Cleveland State
University (5 Feb.), University of Southern
California (12 Feb.), Michigan State University
(15 Feb.), Rowan University (18 Feb.) and
University of Akron (26 Feb.).

The IEEE-USA
Annual Meeting
was held on 4-7 March in Nashville, TN and
featured the theme "The Gathering Storm:
Are You Engineering the Solutions?"
Videos of
this year's IEEE-USA Annual Meeting keynote
addresses and awards ceremony are
available online. Former Lockheed Martin CEO
Norman Augustine and NAE Past President William
Wulf both called on IEEE members to redouble
their efforts in support of the recommendations
in the 2005 National Academies report, "Rising
Above the Gathering Storm: Energizing and
Employing America for a Brighter Economic
Future." The
Annual
Meeting Blog also recaps the keynote talks
and session presentations.
On 23 March,
IEEE-USA helped organize and sponsor a
Virtual Career Fair (Featuring SRC & Lockheed
Martin) made available in partnership with
the IEEE Job Site.
CAREER
WEBINAR:
How the SBA/IEEE-USA Partnership Can Help
Engineering Entrepreneurs [23 Mar. 2010].
Penny Pickett, SBA's Associate Administrator for
Entrepreneurial Development, provided a general
overview of SBA, touching upon the partnership
with IEEE-USA and the range of services/products
that will benefit U.S. IEEE members.
In March, IEEE-USA sponsored student
professional awareness conferences at:
University of Florida (2 March), University of
California at Berkeley (3 March), Youngstown
State University (4 March), Texas Tech (9
March), Ohio University (9 March), Ohio Northern
(22 March) and Louisiana Tech University (25
March).

IEEE-USA organized a Career Makeover and
Survival Workshop for the IEEE Central
Illinois Section on Saturday, April 10th.
In
April, IEEE-USA launched a new, interactive
online publication, IEEE-USA in ACTION,
distributed free to all U.S. IEEE members.
IEEE-USA in ACTION is a quarterly news source
highlighting programs, products, services and
activities that IEEE-USA has to offer, and to
raise awareness of what IEEE-USA is doing on
behalf of U.S. IEEE members.
IEEE-USA is co-sponsoring the
IEEE
Green Technologies Conference, scheduled for
15-16 April in Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas.
IEEE-USA co-sponsored an April 15 congressional
briefing by the
Robotics Caucus featuring Dr. Robin Murphy
(Texas A&M) on rescue robotics, as part of
the first annual
National Robotics Week celebration.
IEEE-USA President Evelyn Hirt participated in
the National Academy's annual Convocation of
Engineering Societies in Washington, DC on 19
April.
IEEE members
Gerald Posakony and Karen Panetta received awards from the American Association of
Engineering Societies (AAES) at its annual
awards banquet on 19 April. Posakony received the 2009 Fritz Medal, referred to as the
highest award in the engineering profession, for
pioneering contributions to the fields of ultrasonics, medical diagnostic ultrasound, and
Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) technologies.
Panetta received the 2009 Norm Augustine
Award for her work with Nerd Girls. The
Augustine Award is presented annually to an
engineer who has demonstrated the capacity for
communicating the excitement and wonder of
engineering so that the public may have a better
understanding of engineering and a better
appreciation for how engineers improve our
quality of life.
IEEE-USA co-sponsored the annual
Engineering Societies Public Policy Symposium,
held on Capitol Hill on 20 April. As part
of the Symposium program, IEEE-USA President
Evelyn HIrt presented a service appreciation
award to retiring U.S. Representative Bart
Gordon.
IEEE-USA co-sponsored an April 21 briefing for
the Congressional
Research Caucus on the work of
the federal Advanced Research Projects Agency -
Energy (ARPA-E).
Working through the Task Force on American
Innovation, IEEE-USA co-sponsored an April 28
congressional forum on Innovation Technology,
Lasers and Jobs.
Nearly
40 IEEE members participated in the
multi-society
Science, Engineering and Technology (SET)
Congressional Visits Day held on
28-29 April.
IEEE-USA President Evelyn Hirt presented
IEEE-USA's Distinguished Public Service Award to
Senators Lamar Alexander and Jeff Bingaman on
April 28.

Entrepreneurs
Day Workshop: IEEE-USA helped organize
the IEEE Entrepreneurs Day Workshop, a day-long
training program set for 8 May at Monmouth
University in New Jersey to teach technology
engineers how to start their own companies. The
workshop is sponsored by Monmouth University,
the IEEE Central New Jersey, New Jersey Coast,
North Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Long
Island Sections, and IEEE Region 1.
IEEE-USA 2009 President Gordon Day is addressing
the workshop, along with experts in small
business financing, representatives from the
Small Business Administration, and successful
technology entrepreneurs. U.S. Rep. Rush
Holt provided a keynote address.
In
May, IEEE-USA released the results of its 2009
Salary Survey and Consultants Fee Survey.
Immediately following release of the 2009
reports, IEEE-USA also launched its 2010 salary
and consultants surveys.

(20 May), by Dr. Dileep Rao, author of
Lessons from Bootstrap to Billions.
On
May 28, the IEEE-USA-supported America
COMPETES Reauthorization Act (HR 5116) was
passed by the House. COMPETES authorizes
funding increases for the National Science
Foundation, the National Institute of Standards
and Technology, the Department of Energy’s
Office of Energy Sciences and other federal S&T
and innovation programs.

The IEEE-USA Board of Directors met on 25 June in Montreal, Canada as part of the IEEE
Board of Directors meeting series.
On June 23, IEEE-USA and AIMBE offered a
congressional briefing on Patent Reform and the
Impact on American Innovation to provide
insights on the prospective impacts of proposed
patent reforms on small business start-ups, with
an emphasis on the medical devices field.

Financing Needs to the Right Financial Structure
(24 June), by Dr. Dileep Rao, author of
Lessons from Bootstrap to Billions.
IEEE-USA and the IEEE Computer Society are
working together on a three year project to
develop a model professional exam requested by
state licensure boards for licensing software
engineers. Contracts setting the project in
motion were signed in June. The effort is in
partnership with the National Council of
Examiners for Engineering and Surveying.

Commercialization, Job Growth and

CAREER WEBINAR:
Fine-Tune Financing: Finding the Right
Sources/Instruments (22 July), by Dr. Dileep Rao,
author of Lessons from Bootstrap to Billions.
IEEE-USA
presented its 2009 Journalism awards to Holly
Morris (Fox5) and Randy Atkins (National Academy
of Engineering) of at a special luncheon with
Washington science and technology correspondents
on 16 July. The event was reported by the
local FOXtv affiliate and by the Voice of
America. Morris was recognized for her
series of TV stories featuring the Discover
Engineering Family Day event held each year
during National Engineers Week. Atkins is
the producer of the National Academy of
Engineering's
Engineering Innovation podcast and radio
series.
The
final issue of IEEE-USA's Today's Engineer
Digest (March 2009 issue) received an APEX
Award of Excellence in the magapapers and
newspapers-print category. The APEX Awards
for Publication Excellence are based on
excellence in graphic design, editorial content,
and the success of the entry in achieving
overall communications effectiveness and
excellence.
IEEE-USA co-sponsored a July 14
briefing with Discover Magazine, the
National Science Foundation, and ASME on the
role of natural gas, as part of our on-going
series on
The Road to the New Energy Economy.
On July 20, representatives of IEEE-USA's
Intellectual Property Committee participated in
a Patent Reform Roundtable on Capital
Hill organized for members of the House
Judiciary Committee and their staffs to discuss
concerns with the Senate patent reform act.
CAREER WEBINAR: SBA and Innovation
(27 July). In the session Max Summers,
Missouri Small Business and Technology
Development Centers (SBTDC) State Director and
his colleague Jim Gann will discuss their role
in helping universities transform research into
products that can be commercialized, and
building innovation into companies.
As a member of the Robotics Caucus Steering
Committee, IEEE-USA will co-sponsor a
congressional briefing on Robotics in Mining
and Energy scheduled for 29 July on Capitol
Hill.

In October 2010, IEEE-USA will be conducting a
Future Engineering Skills: Future Media
symposium in conjunction with Georgia Institute
of Technology (GIT) to discuss the skills that
will be needed for the future engineering job
market.
IEEE-USA is participating as an exhibitor in the
U.S. Science and Engineering Festival, a two
day event on 23-24 Oct. 2010 in which over 500
science and engineering organizations from all
over the U.S. descend on the National Mall in
Washington, DC to present hands-on, fun science
and engineering activities to inspire the next
generation of scientists and engineers.

Technologies for Homeland Security, tentatively
scheduled for 8-10 Nov. in Waltham, Ma.
The IEEE-USA Board of Directors will meet on 19
Nov. in New Brunswick, NJ as part of the IEEE
Board of Directors meeting series.
Peter Pollak and IEEE-USA Legislative
Representative Bill Williams will present
IEEE-USA's National Energy Policy
Recommendations as a paper at the 2010 IEEE
Energy
Conversion Congress and Exposition (12-16
Sept) in Atlanta, Georgia.
